Praise Power Prevention - St. Mary's Hospital and Health Care System

According to the American Cancer Society, African American women are less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer; however, paradoxically this same group of women has the highest rate of mortality § . Breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death among African-American women. In order to address this disparity within our community, St. Mary’s Healthcare System and Athens Regional Medical Center have partnered to create the Praise! Power! Prevention! Program. This dynamic program seeks to empower our local community to take charge of breast cancer. Every other month, Breast Health Nurses & Hospital Chaplains will visit African-American congregations to discuss issues including prevention, signs, symptoms & treatment as well as the emotional and spiritual concerns related to breast cancer.

Topics Covered:

  • How to lower breast cancer risk
  • Signs & Symptoms of breast cancer
  • Treatment
  • Emotional and Spiritual aspects of cancer
