Sissy Moore: Staying active for fitness, grandchildren

Sissy Moore, 52, has been referred to as St. Mary’s Wellness Center’s most dedicated member, both by the staff and her husband. Her title is well earned, as she has stuck to her routine of working out six days a week since the couple joined the center seven years ago.

A regular walker her whole life, Mrs. Moore decided she needed a change of pace in her fitness routine. When she learned about the Wellness Center from a fellow walker, she and her husband, Rocky, checked it out and decided to join. Once a member, Sissy found she could change up her workout to continue challenging herself, improve her fitness level and keep from getting bored.

“I love to do the machines,” Moore says. “I usually spend 15 minutes each on the treadmill, the elliptical, the bike, and the Stairmaster. And then I move to the weights.”

Her exercise regimen is intense and requires a lot of focused energy. She does much more than the typical exerciser, including her husband, who calls her “the star” of the gym.

“I need to keep my energy level up because I have two grandkids,” Moore says of her decision to stay so active. “They require endless amounts of energy to run around with them, chase them, and be able to roll around on the floor playing. Since I’ve been at the gym, I feel healthier and stronger, so I am able to keep up with them, aside from just feeling better for myself.”

Mr. Moore says, “She walks faster than me, works out harder, drinks 8-10 glasses of water a day and feeds us both healthy food.”

Mrs. Moore also says the fact that she and her husband work out together keeps them both motivated. “It’s nice to be able to come work out with someone. It is also important to feel comfortable in a gym,” she says.

She credits the staff and relaxed atmosphere at the Wellness Center for her comfort level there, adding, “The staff is so friendly and helpful, and we’ve met some great friends here.”
