Diabetes Care

The Diabetes Care Department at St. Mary’s is a team of registered nurses, dieticians, personal physicians, and a medical director all working to teach and support people with diabetes.  Through education and lifestyle changes, diabetes can be managed.  The Diabetes Care Department is accredited by the American Diabetes Association and teaches the self-management of diabetes. A physician’s referral is needed.

St. Mary’s will help you to:

Learn about diabetes

  • Follow your self-management program
  • Meet regularly with members of the health care team
  • Ask questions of all health care team members

In learning about self-management, patients will receive information on:

  • Meal planning and label reading
  • The medical management of diabetes
  • Exercise counseling and individual counseling for patients of all ages living with diabetes
  • Support groups and educational meetings
  • Counseling before and during pregnancy
  • Follow-up care

Persons who may benefit from these educational programs include:

  • Newly diagnosed persons with diabetes
  • Persons previously diagnosed who need updated information
  • Persons living with diabetes, family, friends, and others who want to be trained in self-care management strategies to reduce complications of diabetes
  • Persons who need insulin pump training
  • Persons affected by diabetes during pregnancy

St. Mary’s Diabetes Care Department will work with the patient, the patient’s family, and the patient’s physician to prevent long-term complications, improve diabetes management and blood glucose balance, and improve the quality of life.
